Jefferson Township Teach-In
Keynote Speech
In an evening for teaching, learning, and coming together, Jefferson Township residents, police, elected officials, and others gathered at the gazebo of the Township Municipal building to attend a peaceful teach-in. In this keynote address, I recount moments of overt, covert, and systemic racism that I experienced as one of the few Black citizens of Jefferson.
The Vagina Monologues &
Yoni Ki Baat - Director's Note
The Vagina Monologues breaks down archaic stereotypes, and forces people to re-evaluate their perceptions of womanhood and feminism. However, as the years go on and the definitions of womanhood and feminism expand, the Vagina Monologues hasn’t expanded along with them. The stories of the women interviewed by Eve Ensler two decades ago do not embody the experience of today’s women, particularly women of color and femme identifying individuals whose narratives were ignored and ultimately rejected back then. We did not want to give up on The Vagina Monologues, and so we put our heads together to improve it as best we could within the resources and guidelines given to us by the V-Day Organization. What we came up with was Yoni Ki Baat - a showcase of the experiences of women of color and queer women through original monologues. We are so excited to introduce YKB to Boston University’s campus and to highlight the marginalized stories that VagMo does not necessarily depict. We stand by The Vagina Monologues because it fosters a community of passionate, intelligent, and strong female identifying and non-binary people to come together and lift each other up. We want all women, regardless of their ethnicity, gender performance, or sexuality to feel welcome in that community. What Eve Ensler’s script may lack, we will work tirelessly to expand upon. Our vision is to continue to improve this show, ourselves, our community, and the world as a whole; that starts here, in this theatre, with this cast, with this crew, and with you. - Ina Joseph & Alem Kent VagMo & Yoni Ki Baat Directors February 2019
